How many days until your birthday?
A birthday countdown measures the calendar days between a reference date and your next birthday. If your birthday is still ahead this year, count to that date. If it has already passed, count to the anniversary in the following year. On your birthday itself, the answer is zero days.
How to calculate days until your next birthday
Take the month and day from the birth date and place them in the reference year. Compare that anniversary with the date from which you want to count. If the anniversary comes before the reference date, move it to the next year. The difference between those two dates is the number of days remaining.
Use actual calendar days rather than treating every month as 30 days. February has 28 or 29 days, and other months have 30 or 31. The countdown excludes the starting date: a birthday tomorrow is one day away, and a birthday today is zero days away.
Birthday countdown example
For a person born on November 15, 2000, the next birthday after October 10, 2026 is November 15, 2026. The countdown is 36 days, or five weeks and one day. The person turns 26 on that birthday.
If the reference date changes to November 15, 2026, the countdown is zero. If it changes to November 16, the next birthday is November 15, 2027. Moving into a new year does not reset the countdown; the calculation continues toward the next anniversary.
February 29 birthdays and leap years
A February 29 birth date needs a convention in years without February 29. Some people use February 28, while others celebrate on March 1. Both options are available in the calculation above, and the chosen option applies only to common years. In a leap year, the anniversary remains February 29.
For example, on February 28, 2025, a February 29 birthday is zero days away under the February 28 option and one day away under the March 1 option. In the Gregorian calendar, years divisible by four are leap years, except century years must also be divisible by 400.
Birthday countdown in weeks, hours and minutes
To express the countdown in weeks, divide the number of remaining days by seven. Keep the whole-number part as complete weeks and the remainder as additional days. A countdown of 20 days is two weeks and six days.
- Hours: remaining days multiplied by 24.
- Minutes: remaining days multiplied by 1,440.
- Seconds: remaining days multiplied by 86,400.
The totals below the clock express calendar days in smaller units. The live flip clock counts down to the start of your birthday at midnight in your local time zone. When the reference date is not today, the flip clock previews the interval starting at midnight on that selected date.
Age on your next birthday and its weekday
The age reached on a birthday is the birthday year minus the birth year. A person born in 2000 turns 26 on their birthday in 2026. This differs from their current completed age if that birthday has not happened yet.
The weekday of a birthday depends on the full date, including its year. A birthday can fall on a different weekday next year because common years contain 365 days and leap years contain 366. The weekday of birth comes from the original birth date, while the upcoming birthday weekday comes from its next anniversary.
For a breakdown of current age into completed years, months and days, see the Age Calculator. For the elapsed days between any two dates, see the Date Difference Calculator.
Frequently asked questions about birthday countdowns
Does the countdown include today?
No. It counts the elapsed calendar days from the reference date to the birthday. Tomorrow is one day away; today is zero days away.
What happens if my birthday has already passed?
The target moves to the birthday anniversary in the following year. The countdown includes all calendar days until that date.
Can I count from a past or future date?
Yes. The reference date determines which birthday comes next. It must be on or after the date of birth.
How are February 29 birthdays counted?
In leap years, the target is February 29. In common years, choose February 28 or March 1 to match the anniversary you use.
Why can a countdown change by a day in another calculator?
Check whether it includes both endpoints, uses a different time zone, counts to a specific time, or applies a different February 29 convention.
