Tip Calculator: Gratuity, Total Bill, and Payments per Person
A tip calculator works out a gratuity from a bill amount and a percentage or fixed tip you choose. It adds that tip to the bill and divides the total equally when more than one person is paying.
How to calculate a percentage tip
Divide the tip percentage by 100 and multiply by the bill amount.
Tip = bill × tip percentage ÷ 100
Total including tip = bill + tip
Average total per person = total ÷ number of people
For a 15% tip, multiply the bill by 0.15. For 20%, multiply by 0.20. The quick percentage buttons are calculation shortcuts, not a recommendation about what rate to choose.
Tip examples for different bill amounts
On a bill of 100 with a 15% tip, the tip is 15 and the total is 115. If two people share it equally, the total per person is 57.50 and the average tip per person is 7.50.
On a bill of 80 with an 18% tip, the tip is 14.40 and the total is 94.40. Four people each pay 23.60.
On a bill of 49.99 with a 20% tip, the unrounded tip is 9.998. In a two-decimal currency it rounds to 10.00, giving a total of 59.99 before optional round-up.
Percentage tips versus fixed tip amounts
A percentage tip changes with the bill. A fixed tip stays at the amount you enter. A fixed tip of 10 on a bill of 50 is equivalent to 20%, while the same tip on a bill of 100 is equivalent to 10%.
For a bill greater than zero, the equivalent percentage is tip amount ÷ bill × 100. A zero bill can still receive a fixed tip, but its equivalent percentage is undefined.
Currency and decimal places
The currency selector sets the display and rounding for your amounts. It does not convert currencies. Use one currency for the bill and any fixed tip.
Most listed currencies use two decimal places. Japanese yen uses whole units. The bill and tip are rounded to these units before the total is split.
How to split the total without losing cents
The calculation rounds the entered bill and chosen tip to the currency’s usual decimal places. It then divides the total into payments.
If the total cannot be shared equally in the smallest currency units, remaining units are assigned in person order. The headline shows a rounded average, and the exact individual payment list shows amounts that add up to the total.
For a total of 100 split three ways in a two-decimal currency, the exact payments are 33.34, 33.33, and 33.33. The average tip-per-person figure is also rounded and is not a separate payment to add again.
Frequently asked questions
Is tax included in the tip calculation?
The percentage applies to the bill amount you enter. There is no separate tax input. Include or exclude existing tax according to the amount you intend to use as the tip base.
What if the bill already includes a gratuity?
If you do not want to add another tip, enter zero. Existing charges in the bill are shared as part of that bill.
Can I use a custom tip percentage?
Yes. Enter any percentage from 0 to 100, including decimal values such as 12.5.
Does changing currency convert my amounts?
No. It changes the label and rounding. No exchange rates are applied.
Can I split the bill between more than two people?
Yes. Enter a whole-number count from 1 to 50. For larger groups, expand the individual payment list to view every share.
Can I change between a percentage and a fixed tip?
Yes. Select Percentage or Fixed beneath the tip controls. Percentage uses the slider; Fixed lets you enter a tip amount.
