Currency Converter: Convert Amounts Using Reference Exchange Rates
A currency converter estimates how much an amount in one currency represents in another. Select the currency you have, the currency you want to compare it with, and an amount. The result uses the latest available rate returned for that pair and shows its reference date.
How to calculate a currency conversion
Multiply the source amount by the rate expressed as target currency units for one source currency unit.
Converted amount = source amount × exchange rate
Read the direction carefully. A rate stated as “1 USD = R INR” means R rupees per dollar. Multiply dollars by R to estimate rupees. The calculation uses the returned rate before rounding the displayed amount.
A currency conversion example
Suppose a hypothetical rate is 1 unit of currency A = 1.25 units of currency B. Converting 100 A gives 100 × 1.25 = 125 B. Converting 500 A at the same rate gives 625 B.
These are illustrative numbers, not a current quote for any real currency pair. Actual results depend on the rate fetched when you calculate.
Where do the rates come from?
This converter requests reference rates from Frankfurter. Its documented API provides daily rates from central banks and official sources. The date returned with a rate is displayed in the result.
A latest available rate can have an earlier date than today. It is a reference figure rather than a continuously updating trading quote. A failed request produces an alert rather than a made-up replacement rate.
Direct versus inverse exchange rates
If 1 A equals 1.25 B, the inverse rate is 1 ÷ 1.25 = 0.8 A per B. The result shows both directions so you can interpret the rate correctly.
After a conversion, Swap uses the unrounded converted amount as the next input and reverses the currencies. The reverse calculation requests a fresh rate, so rounding or a changed quote can affect the returned amount.
When both selected currencies are the same, the rate is 1. That calculation requires no network request.
Why a provider’s quote can differ
The calculation does not add bank fees, card charges, transfer costs, or an exchange provider’s rate margin. A quoted transaction amount may therefore differ from a reference-rate estimate.
For a specific exchange, compare the provider’s actual rate, any fees, and the amount received. This converter supplies an indicative arithmetic comparison; it does not execute a transaction.
Frequently asked questions
Does this use live trading prices?
No. It fetches the latest available reference rate from the documented source. The result shows the rate date.
Why is an internet connection required?
Different-currency conversions request an exchange rate online. Same-currency conversions use a rate of 1 and work without that request.
Can I convert zero or a decimal amount?
Yes. Zero and positive decimal amounts are supported. Negative amounts are rejected.
Why do some currencies display no decimal places?
The converted amount uses the selected currency’s usual decimal formatting. For example, Japanese yen is displayed in whole units. Rates retain more precision than final currency amounts.
What if the rate service is unavailable?
An alert explains the failure. Check the connection and try again. No stale result is shown after changing an input.
Does the converter store my amount?
The amount is multiplied in your browser. The rate request contains the currency codes, not the amount entered.
