Rent Split Calculator: Divide Rent Between Roommates

A rent split calculator divides a shared rent amount into payments for each person. Equal splitting gives everyone the same proportion. Weighted splitting uses agreed share weights so one person can pay more or less than another.

How to split rent equally

Divide the total rent by the number of people paying it.

Rent per person = total rent ÷ number of people

For rent of 1,800 shared by three people, each pays 600. Equal splitting is a straightforward choice when everyone agrees to the same share. Enter a whole-number count from 1 to 20.

How a weighted rent split works

Assign a positive weight to each person. Add all weights together, then divide each person’s weight by the sum to find their proportion of the rent.

Person’s payment = total rent × person’s weight ÷ sum of all weights

Weights describe relative proportions. With weights 1, 1, and 2, the total weight is 4. The first two people each pay 25%, and the third pays 50%. Weights 2, 2, and 4 produce the same proportions.

Enter one weight per person, separated by commas or spaces. Every weight must be greater than zero. Decimal weights, such as 1, 1.5, and 2, are allowed.

Examples of splitting rent

Equal split: rent of 2,000 shared by three people gives an unrounded share of 666.666… . With a two-decimal currency, the displayed payments are 666.67, 666.67, and 666.66. Together they equal 2,000 exactly.

Weighted split: rent of 2,000 with weights 1, 1, and 2 gives payments of 500, 500, and 1,000.

Different proportions: rent of 1,500 with weights 2 and 3 gives payments of 600 and 900. Those weights represent 40% and 60% of the total.

Why rounded shares may differ by one cent

Many rent amounts cannot be divided into perfectly equal amounts at the smallest currency unit. Rounding every share independently can make their sum too high or too low.

This calculator rounds the total to the selected currency’s usual decimal places, calculates the proportional shares, and distributes leftover smallest units to the largest fractional remainders. Ties follow person order. The displayed shares therefore add up to the displayed total.

US dollars and the other listed currencies except Japanese yen use two decimal places here. Japanese yen uses whole units. The percentages describe the agreed proportions before this small rounding adjustment.

How to choose rent share weights

Weights should reflect the proportions everyone agrees to use. Room size, private bathrooms, parking, or other differences may be reasons to discuss unequal payments, but this calculator does not decide which arrangement is fair.

Room areas can serve as weights when everyone agrees to divide the entire rent that way. For example, weights 100 and 150 create a 40% and 60% split. This also distributes the cost of shared spaces in those proportions; it does not separately price bedrooms and common areas.

Use rent for the same period for every person. If you include utilities or other shared charges in the total, those charges follow the same split. Calculate them separately when they use different proportions.

Frequently asked questions

Can I split rent between just two people?

Yes. Choose equal shares with two people, or enter two weights for a proportional split.

Can share weights be percentages?

Yes. Weights of 30 and 70 give a 30% and 70% split. Weights do not need to add to 100 because the calculation normalizes their sum.

Why is a zero weight rejected?

This calculator requires a positive weight for each person included in the payment split. Leave someone out of the weight list if they are not contributing.

Does changing currency convert the rent?

No. It changes the label and rounding used to display the entered rent. It does not use exchange rates.

Can the total rent be zero?

Yes. All calculated payments are zero. Negative rent amounts are not supported.

Does this include deposits or partial-month rent?

There are no separate deposit or prorating calculations. Enter the total amount you have already decided to split for the relevant period.
