Split Bill Calculator: Divide a Bill and Tip Equally
A split bill calculator finds how much each person contributes when a group shares a bill equally. It adds an optional percentage tip to the entered bill and divides the total by the number of people paying.
Use the bill amount before an additional tip, including any tax or charges you want to share. Enter zero for the tip if you are not adding one.
How to split a bill with a tip
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage divided by 100. Add the tip amount to the bill, then divide by the number of people.
Tip amount = bill × tip percentage ÷ 100
Total to share = bill + tip amount
Average per person = total to share ÷ number of people
The number of people must be a whole number from 1 to 50. Bill amounts can be zero or positive, and the tip rate can be from 0% to 100%, including decimals.
Example: a bill of 100 with a 15% tip
A bill of 100 with a 15% tip adds 15 to the bill. The total is 115. Split between two people, each pays 57.50.
For a bill of 240, a 10% tip, and four people, the tip is 24 and the total is 264. Each person pays 66. With no tip, the same bill would be 60 per person.
A bill of 100 with no tip split between three people gives an average of 33.333… . In a two-decimal currency, exact payments are 33.34, 33.33, and 33.33. Those payments add to 100.
How to handle tax, tips, and existing charges
This calculator applies the tip percentage to the entire bill amount entered. It does not add a separate tax or service charge. Include any existing charges in that amount if the group intends to split them.
If a receipt already includes a tip or gratuity you do not want to add again, use a tip rate of zero. A percentage tip is calculated from the entered bill; the calculator does not select a tipping rate for you.
If your group calculates a tip on a different base, such as a subtotal excluding some charges, work out that tip separately. You can then enter the combined amount to share with the calculator’s tip field set to zero.
Why individual payments may differ by one cent
A total cannot always be divided evenly into the smallest currency units. The headline shows a rounded average, while the individual payment list distributes any remainder so the displayed payments equal the total.
The bill amount is rounded to the currency’s usual decimal places. The calculated tip is rounded next, and those amounts are added. Each person receives an equal whole-unit share, with remaining smallest units assigned in person order.
For currencies with two decimal places, the smallest unit is 0.01. Japanese yen uses whole units here. A total of 100 yen split three ways gives payments of 34, 33, and 33 yen.
When is an equal split useful?
An equal split works when everyone agrees to share the full bill in the same proportion. It can suit a shared meal, group purchase, or common expense.
It does not allocate items to individual people or account for different spending. If each person should pay for what they ordered, total their items and agreed charges separately. For a proportional split by agreed weights, use the Rent Split Calculator with the amount you want to divide.
Frequently asked questions
Can I split the bill without a tip?
Yes. Set the tip percentage to zero, then enter the bill and number of people.
Does the calculator add sales tax?
No. There is no separate tax input. Include any tax you want to share in the bill amount.
Why does the headline differ slightly from one person’s payment?
The headline is a rounded average. Individual payments distribute leftover smallest currency units so their sum matches the total exactly.
Can I enter a decimal tip percentage?
Yes. Rates such as 12.5% are supported.
Does changing currency convert the bill?
No. It changes the label and rounding used for entered amounts. It does not apply exchange rates.
Can one person pay the whole bill?
Yes. Enter one person. Their payment equals the bill plus the entered tip.
