Unit Price Calculator: Compare Package Value

Price per unit expresses a package’s cost for one unit of quantity. It can mean price per kilogram, liter, item, meter, or another measurement. Dividing price by quantity makes it easier to compare packages of different sizes.

How to calculate unit price

Divide the total package price by the total quantity in the package.

Price per unit = package price ÷ package quantity

For a multipack, use the total number of items. For products sold by weight or volume, use the package’s total weight or volume. The quantity must be greater than zero, while the price may be zero.

Example: 12 for a 3 kg package

A package priced at 12 with a quantity of 3 kg costs 4 per kg, because 12 ÷ 3 = 4. A second package priced at 18 for 5 kg costs 3.60 per kg.

The second package has the lower unit price, even though it costs more at checkout. Its unit price is 0.40 per kg lower, or 10% lower than the first package’s 4 per kg. The total package price and the price for one unit answer different questions.

How to compare two package prices

Calculate each package’s price per unit using the same currency and quantity unit. The lower unit price offers more quantity for each unit of money, assuming the products are otherwise comparable.

Percentage lower = (higher unit price − lower unit price) ÷ higher unit price × 100

When both unit prices are equal, neither package has a price advantage per unit. Choose the size that fits your needs. If both prices are zero, the unit prices are equal and there is no percentage difference to calculate.

Why units must match before comparing

Prices per gram and per kilogram cannot be compared as if they use the same denominator. Convert quantities to one shared unit first. For example, 500 g equals 0.5 kg. A package costing 6 for 500 g costs 12 per kg, because 6 ÷ 0.5 = 12.

Likewise, 1,000 mL equals 1 L. A 750 mL bottle can be entered as 0.75 L when comparing it with a one-liter bottle. The unit selector labels the entered quantity; changing it does not convert an existing number.

Weight and volume are different measurements. Converting between kilograms and liters requires information about the product’s density. Compare like measurements rather than assuming they are interchangeable.

Discounts, multipacks, and larger packages

Use the actual package price you expect to pay after a relevant discount. If one price includes extra charges and another does not, make the price definitions consistent before comparing.

A pack of 12 items for 9 costs 0.75 per item. A pack of 8 items for 5.60 costs 0.70 per item. In this example, the smaller pack has the lower unit price. Larger packaging does not automatically mean better value.

Unit price is one part of a purchase decision. Product quality, usable quantity, shelf life, and how much you need can also matter. A lower unit price may not reduce your total spending if some of the package goes unused.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use decimal quantities?

Yes. Enter values such as 0.5 kg, 1.5 L, or 2.25 m. The quantity must be positive.

Why is zero quantity rejected?

Price per unit requires division by quantity. Dividing by zero does not produce a usable unit price.

Does changing the currency convert my price?

No. Currency selection changes the amount’s label and formatting. It does not apply exchange rates.

Can a free product have a unit price?

Yes. A zero-priced package with a positive quantity has a unit price of zero.

Why are more than two decimal places shown?

Small unit prices can lose useful precision when rounded to two decimals. The unit-price result shows up to six decimal places. Extremely small or large values use scientific notation.

Does the comparison convert grams to kilograms automatically?

No. Enter both quantities in the selected shared unit. For example, use 0.5 and 1 when comparing 500 g and 1 kg in kilograms.
