Healthy weight range for adults
This calculator estimates the weight range that corresponds to an adult BMI from 18.5 to 24.9 at the height you enter. It displays both kilograms and pounds and visualizes the range on an animated gauge.
How to use the Healthy Weight Calculator
- Enter your height in centimetres or switch to feet and inches.
- Enter your current weight in pounds or kilograms.
- Enter your age. This calculator is intended for adults age 20 and older.
- Select Calculate healthy range.
- Review the lower boundary, midpoint and upper boundary in kilograms and pounds.
Healthy weight formula
Lower boundary: 18.5 × height² in metres
Upper boundary: 24.9 × height² in metres
For example, a height of 1.75 metres gives approximately 56.7 kg at BMI 18.5 and 76.3 kg at BMI 24.9. Pound results use 1 kilogram = 2.20462 pounds.
How to interpret the result
The displayed interval is a population-level screening range, not a mandatory goal weight. BMI relates weight to height but does not directly measure body fat, muscle, bone density or fat distribution. Two adults at the same height and weight can have different body compositions and health profiles.
Consider the result alongside waist measurement, health history, fitness, laboratory results and professional advice. Athletes, older adults and people with high or low muscle mass may need more individualized interpretation.
Who should not use the adult range?
Adult BMI categories do not apply to children and teenagers, who require age- and sex-specific growth charts. Pregnancy changes expected body weight, and clinical conditions can also make a standard BMI range inappropriate.
Frequently asked questions
What is considered a healthy BMI for adults?
A BMI from 18.5 through 24.9 is commonly labelled the healthy or normal adult screening range. Individual interpretation can differ.
Is the midpoint my ideal weight?
No. The midpoint is included only as a useful reference. There is no single ideal weight determined by height alone.
Why does the calculator require age 20 or older?
People under 20 should be assessed with BMI-for-age growth charts rather than fixed adult BMI categories.
Does this calculator account for sex or body frame?
No. The adult BMI formula uses height and weight only. Sex, frame size and body composition can affect how the range should be interpreted.
Can muscular people fall outside the range?
Yes. Greater muscle mass can raise body weight and BMI without indicating excess body fat.
Should I try to reach this range quickly?
No. Any weight-change plan should be gradual, nutritionally adequate and appropriate for your health circumstances.
