Understand your body composition

Estimate how much of your body weight is lean mass and how much is fat mass using your measured or estimated body-fat percentage.

What is lean body mass?

Lean body mass (LBM) is your total body weight minus fat mass. It includes skeletal muscle, bones, organs, connective tissue and body water. Because it includes much more than muscle, lean body mass and muscle mass are not the same measurement.

This calculator separates total weight into two useful estimates: lean body mass and fat mass. The gauge shows the share of your weight represented by lean mass; it does not label that percentage as healthy or unhealthy.

How to use the lean body mass calculator

  1. Enter your current body weight and choose pounds or kilograms.
  2. Enter a body-fat percentage measured or estimated with one consistent method.
  3. Select Calculate lean body mass to view lean mass, fat mass, lean percentage and the lean-to-fat ratio.

For useful comparisons over time, measure under similar conditions. Time of day, hydration, food intake and recent exercise can affect scale-based body-fat readings.

Lean body mass formula

Lean body mass = body weight × (1 − body-fat percentage ÷ 100)

Fat mass = body weight × (body-fat percentage ÷ 100)

The calculation works in pounds or kilograms because both outputs use the same unit as the weight entered. The calculator also displays the equivalent result in the other unit.

How to understand your result

The headline is the estimated weight of all non-fat tissue. Lean percentage is the proportion of total weight represented by lean mass. Fat mass is the estimated weight of body fat, and the lean-to-fat ratio compares those two amounts.

There is no universal ideal lean percentage for every person. Sex, age, hydration, athletic training, measurement method and health context all affect interpretation. Track trends using the same method rather than treating a small one-time change as definitive.

Body-fat percentage determines accuracy

The formula itself is simple; the main uncertainty comes from the body-fat value. DEXA, air-displacement plethysmography, skinfold measurements and bioelectrical-impedance devices can produce different estimates. Consumer smart scales are especially sensitive to hydration and testing conditions.

If the entered body-fat percentage is too high, calculated lean mass will be too low. If it is too low, calculated lean mass will be too high. Keep the original measurement source with your result when comparing readings.

Lean body mass vs. muscle mass

Lean body mass includes muscle, but it also includes water, bone, organs and other non-fat tissue. A change in estimated lean mass therefore does not automatically mean the same amount of muscle was gained or lost. Hydration shifts can move the estimate even when muscle tissue has not meaningfully changed.

Lean body mass examples

A person weighing 154.3 lb at 20% body fat has an estimated lean body mass of 123.4 lb and estimated fat mass of 30.9 lb. In metric units, that is approximately 56.0 kg lean mass and 14.0 kg fat mass.

If body weight stays at 154.3 lb and body fat is entered as 25%, estimated lean mass becomes 115.7 lb. That difference reflects the entered body-fat estimate; it does not independently measure tissue change.

Why track lean body mass?

Lean mass estimates can add context when body weight alone is not enough. People often track LBM while changing nutrition or training to see whether weight change appears to come mainly from fat mass or lean tissue. For clinical treatment, athletic programming or substantial weight change, use measurements and targets recommended by a qualified professional.

Frequently asked questions

What does lean body mass include?

It includes muscle, bone, organs, connective tissue, body water and other non-fat tissue.

Is lean body mass the same as fat-free mass?

The terms are often used interchangeably in everyday calculators. In specialized research, definitions can differ slightly because some essential lipids may be classified separately.

Can I calculate lean body mass without body-fat percentage?

Height-, weight- and sex-based equations can estimate LBM, but they rely on population averages. This calculator uses a supplied body-fat percentage so the method and assumptions remain clear.

Why did my smart-scale lean mass change overnight?

Bioelectrical-impedance readings can shift with hydration, meals, exercise, skin temperature and time of day. Compare readings taken under similar conditions.

Is this result a diagnosis or required target?

No. It is a body-composition estimate based on the values entered, not a diagnosis or a universal target.
