Area Converter: Square Feet, Square Meters, Acres, and More

An area converter expresses the size of a surface in a different measurement unit. Convert between square meters, square feet, acres, hectares, square kilometers, square centimeters, square millimeters, square yards, square inches, and square miles.

Area measures two-dimensional space. Converting its units changes the number used to describe the space, rather than the size of the surface itself.

How to convert area units

Multiply the input by its unit’s size in square meters, then divide by the target unit’s size in square meters.

Converted area = input area × source factor ÷ target factor

For example, one square foot equals 0.09290304 square meters. To convert square feet to square meters, multiply by 0.09290304. To convert square meters to square feet, divide by that factor.

Square feet to square meters

Square meters = square feet × 0.09290304
Square feet = square meters ÷ 0.09290304

One square meter is approximately 10.7639104167 square feet. A room with an area of 1,000 square feet has an area of 92.90304 m². An area of 100 m² is approximately 1,076.39104167 ft².

These factors use the international foot of exactly 0.3048 meters. Historical measurements using a different foot definition may require a different conversion.

Acres, hectares, and square kilometers

One hectare equals 10,000 m². One square kilometer equals 1,000,000 m², or 100 hectares. One acre equals 43,560 square feet, which is 4,046.8564224 m² using the international foot.

Hectares = acres × 0.40468564224
Acres = hectares ÷ 0.40468564224

One hectare is approximately 2.4710538147 acres. For example, a five-acre area is 20,234.282112 m², or 2.0234282112 hectares.

Worked area conversion examples

100 square yards to square feet: one yard equals three feet, so one square yard equals nine square feet. The answer is 900 ft².

10,000 square centimeters to square meters: one square meter equals 10,000 cm², so the result is 1 m².

One square mile to acres: a square mile equals 640 acres. In square meters, it is 2,589,988.110336 m².

For a rectangular room, calculate the area first by multiplying length by width in the same unit. A 12-foot by 10-foot room measures 120 ft², equivalent to 11.1483648 m².

Why area conversions use squared length factors

A square measures length in two directions. If each side changes by a factor of 100 when converting meters to centimeters, the area changes by 100 × 100 = 10,000.

This is why 1 m² equals 10,000 cm² rather than 100 cm². Similarly, 1 ft² equals 144 in² because one foot contains 12 inches and 12 × 12 = 144.

Keep area and length units separate. Enter an area value already in square units, rather than a single side length. Units such as acres and hectares also measure area, even though their names do not include the word “square.”

Frequently asked questions

Can I enter a decimal area?

Yes. Positive decimal values and zero are supported. Negative areas are rejected.

Does swapping units reverse a conversion?

After a calculation, Swap uses the converted value as the input and reverses the units. Before a calculation, it reverses the units while keeping the current input value.

Does this calculate area from a shape’s dimensions?

No. Enter an area you already know or have calculated. For a rectangle, multiply length by width before converting.

Are acres the same as hectares?

No. One hectare equals about 2.47105 acres, and one acre equals about 0.404686 hectares.

Why do some values show scientific notation?

Very large and very small values use scientific notation to remain readable. Other results show up to ten decimal places.

Are conversion results exact?

The unit definitions supply fixed scale factors, but browser arithmetic and displayed decimal values have finite precision. Rounded results may differ slightly when converted back.
